Making History II Design Report 3: The Military
The military gameplay in Making History II: The War of the World will be dramatically different from the first Making History. With MHII weve moved away from units being more like traditional board game pieces to a system where each unit has its own set of properties. All military forces can now take damage, be reinforced or repaired. By giving units the ability to survive a battle despite being hit, it makes a lot more sense to include other standard unit properties like experience and morale. Units gain experience by engaging in combat. Morale is affected by battlefield results and possibly domestic conditions.
The military forces will still be organized by army groups, naval groups and air groups as container sets for the individual units. The units themselves represent an abstraction of a division, squadron or ship. At the group level weve added a command bonus that acts as a leadership modifier for all units under that group. At this point we do not plan to assign historical figures as in generals and admirals to specific groups although this will be possible for the player since all groups and units can have a custom name. All the new unit properties have a tactical as well as game management impact, and they will ultimately modify the way MHII is played. The expectation is that the player will enjoy the process of building up and improving their units and army groups effectiveness over the course of the game.
Weve also changed the way the military supply operates. Arms are required to maintain your militarys combat strength. Regions will now have a supply rate based on logistical restraints. This limits the amount of Arms a unit can receive when located in a specific region. While the supply rate will improve over time, blitzkrieg-like invasions that probe deep into an enemys territory should experience negative combat affects due to extended lines of supply.
Making History II is played on a broader timeline and offers a number of new military units for nations to build. Special units like Engineers, Mountain Infantry and Paratroopers, plus vintage forces like Bi-planes, Horse Artillery and Zeppelins are all planned for the release. In addition to all the military technologies, tactical oriented projects will be available by researching through Military Academies. Other distinctions will be tied to recruitment manpower. Infantry made in a colonial region might be owned by a colonial master but the soldiers will retain a local identity.
Many of these new features, in addition to others not mentioned here, will increase the level of detail for the MHII player who enjoys more depth. The tactical potential is notably expanded with the addition of reinforcements and supply logistics retreating may become a reasonable option. For those who prefer simplicity, we feel very strong about designing a UI that does not overwhelm the player with too much information all at once. When taken as a whole and combined with the economic game, MHII should be a more challenging and engaging experience for all.
can the player can decide if his army make crimes on population to be real with affects , more events plz
firestone: Do you mean, if there are going to be an [Rape, Plunder, Kill] Button for your attacks?
well, i see two sides of that request, sure it would be more realistic that they could do that on the civil population, but on the other hand, that shouldn't be an option, but an consequence of not having a steady/none supply rate, low morale, low dicipline. that's IMO.
//Uthos
EDIT: also depending on your Country's Economi, and unity amongst your people and ideologi.
when you say improving your units do you mean like upgrading an improved infantry division to an advanced infantry division?
Units may be improved through standard tech upgrades in addition to experience gained from combat.
i mean real events of crimes (eithiopean ,serbian ,jewish , chinese capital ,allies bomber attack on german factories , sovites crimes on army traitors , atomic bomb on japan ( and an option to choose (yes)(no) with effects
it a fact that allies and axis and Comintern made war crimes ... the game should be more realistic
and must be option
Firestone: e.x1: Playing Germany there should be messages that says: your troops in Poland has found 100 Jew's and are now sending them into death camps ?` e.x2: Playing USSR there should be messages that says: your troops has entered Germany's border, your troops starts to Plunder and execute civilians as revenge ?
i don't think that it should be an option, but sure that they don't "behave" and commit crimes. but i feel that it would be pretty Useless to have an button that says: [Commit CRIMES]
(IMO)
(PS) Bomb Factories are not crimes? Factories are used to "feed" the countries army's and is an Infrastructure that could be bombed for strategic purposes :P
and for Deserters none countries people will look upon them with Welcome, and honor. (maby their parents, but probably not)
But yes, every Country have commit War Crimes. (DS)
Edit:
(i'm sure there is some grammar faults in what i wrote, but i'm from Sweden, so i'll try to type so good English i can.)
is there anything new with the weapons and for the rockets can they travel across the sea?
adam_ayoubi: under ww2 there were no inter-continental missiles/rockets i think, but i hope that you culd researh for it, but on the other hand it would be overpower :P
We'll have some weapon systems that go beyond 1945 technology since the war doesn't have to end on a specified date.
uthos you are right ,but the Germans were devolving them until the allies took over Germany and a lot of their research was burned
There was rockets in world war 2 but they only hit england i tell you the german rocks v1 v2 were the only rockets in the untire war
@ Legenda
Yes, the Germans had their V1 & V2 Rockets.
V1 Rocket: 250 km (150 miles) and had a warhead weight at: 850 kg (1,870 lb) - V2 Rocket: 88 km (55 miles) maximum altitude on long range trajectory, 206 km (128 miles) maximum altitude if launched vertically. Warhead 980 kg (2,200 lb) - (Both had the: Amatol as the Warhead, but at different Weights.)
as you can see, none of these were Inter-Continental. also, the USSR had rockets also, with their Katusha Rockets Launchers, (B-13 & B-8). Who totaly crushed Berlin.
Correct me if i'm wrong. (It's always fun to learn something new) :D
And Japan had a few rockets which were flown by people (Kamikaze).
I believe those were airplanes powered by rockets and steered by people crazydude.
That's why it's called "Making History" :) That's also why i love this game :D
Ralph, are there any ideas whatsoever about tech trading/sharing between allies (or maybe even non-allies)? Cos, for example, during the WWII the Spitfire Fighter Plane was largeley used by ALL allies (excluding US) and not only the RAF...and there are many more examples like that...Sherman tanks, Thompson Guns, Messerschmitt planes and really the list goes on and on
Just to underline the examples.....a quote from your UNIT GALERY:
"The Caudron C.59 was a flexible aircraft(.....) It remained in French service for 15 years and was exported to many nations including Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Finland, Manchuria, Portugal, Romania, Turkey and Venezuela, and saw action in the Spanish Civil War."
Tech sharing might be allowed to a degree.
