CALL TO ACTION: Building a better Multiplayer Service

Posted on Jun 18, 2012 at 11:40 AM by Chris

We are currently turning our attention to improving the Multiplayer Service, and we'd like your help. Please check out the questions below and share your experience using the service:

  1. Are you having problems finding players and setting up a multiplayer game?

  2. Have you been able to play a game using the asymmetrical service? If not, what went wrong?

  3. Have you finished a multiplayer game? If not, why?

  4. Have you had connection problems? If so, could you reconnect and continue playing?

  5. Anything else you want to share? Perhaps suggestions for the interface?

When reporting any issues, it is hugely helpful if you tell us the following:
- Your Operating System
- Your version of Sandstone (found in Add/Remove Programs, under "Version" column)
- Whether or not you are behind a firewall
- What Anti-virus Software you are using
- Your overall connection speed

If you run Debugview and it doesn't show anything game-related that is causing a problem, that still helps. It tells us that the problem is related to the web service and not the game.

Thanks! The more feedback we get the better the experience will be for you.

I've been using Mozilla Firefox to try and play Making History II online, but every time I try to play, I get the message, "Failed to start" after it opens in a new window. I've tried refreshing the page multiple times and I still get the same message.

I use pre-release, always get "sandstone player not up to date" or something like that when trying to join a game.

Does connection speed play a role in whether the game loads in the browser or not? If so, I suggest that you make it easier to load the game up with lower connection speeds. Would a download speed of 1 Mbps due? Also, I have seen the same problem as Gingdardabarbar. I am curious whether it is a result of internet speed or errors in the software on the computer. Lastly, what do you mean by "asymmetrical service." I can't exactly answer your question, since I do not know what you mean. Thank you for working with this matter.

Finding players is no big problem, there are a lot of people willing to play. Setting up the game was more of a challenge. The interface would do better to be revamped, and the link to the Sandstone Player should be plastered on the site. I can't find it anywhere, and had to do intense searching to find it.

I have finished a multiplayer game. The system works fine, for the most part, once you get it set up and running.

Very few connection problems, and most games had none. Very impressed with this, again, once you get the game going, its great.

Are you sure it's browser-related? Have you tried with Chrome or IE? Are you setting up a game or trying to join another?

It references the gameplay where each player can go in and take a turn whenever they want and then leave. Players accessing the game at different times is what makes it "asymmetrical".

Yes, I have tried with IE and chrome and both come fail sooner than Firefox. They both stopped once a new tab came up, but the screen did not change from the dark grey to the later loading screen.

I personally found that Firefox runs the game better for some reason. In chrome, I cannot get the game to load at all and in IE I am unable to zoom with the scroll bar on the mouse. Firefox generally runs more smoothly and the zoom function actually works. In Firefox, it is more like I am playing in the full screen mode with the exception of the browser tool bars.

You can't play on the service with the pre-release option turned on. The service requires you to be running the latest released version of the game.

I always get this.

You don't have the current content used by the multiplayer service (version 1.26.27589.120). If you have Making History II installed you should close the browser, update Making History II to the latest version, and try again.

If you don't have Making History II installed you can go to the support page to download the current version.

If you're on a Mac you will need to launch the game once before playing online.

The games is up to date & is installed in steam.

Upload Speed: 0.45Mbps

Me and my friends have the same problem. We have played several games together - without any massive problems. But now when we want to start a new game we receive the message "Failed to start". We use Firefox - latest version, Sandstone - latest version ant MH 2 client - latest version (no pre-release version)

Hi Ledermacken, can you post the game and launcher versions (and check with your friends for theirs)? Just to verify that the content is updated.

Im unclear why this is but I am unable to load a game from the weblobby. I open the game and it churns at loading. Attempted to connect from ingame directly to a friend also fails to retrieve any data.

Latest Version of IE under windows 7.

We are working on it. As it only affects some machines we are looking at what they may have in common. Be sure we have all your PC stats and try to capture data using debugview.

Not for this specific game but we are very interested in the iPad as a strategy game platform.

While playing in the multiplayer service, I encountered an error where territorial transfer treaties do not show the territories that players are proposing to transfer. They simply appear blank. This can be serious. In a particular game a player lost all of his territories because he accepted a blank treaty.

Looks like it happens with LAN games as well. It may just be a layering issue (text showing up behind the panel. Working on it now.

We think we've fixed the "failed to Start" error, but unlike game fixes, the multiplayer stuff will only go live with the official 1.27 release and not as part of the pre-release builds.

Dreadnought MHII

So the "failed to start error" will only be fixed after the 1.27 update? When is that scheduled? What was the cause? Thanks for working to solve this problem. Let's hope that it is fixed.

Would it be possible to set the games so that they go off of the game creator's version number? I.E., if someone is getting pre-release updates, currently they cannot join a game. Those using the pre-release option could then label their games as such, letting other pre-release players know that they can join that game.

The issue was some startup code that was timing out when it should not have. We're hoping to get 1.27 out ASAP - all the featutes are in it's just a matter of testing.

Currently the service and the local install of the game are sharing a copy of the game. So if you update your local copy of the game to the pre-release version you can't play on the service - it only supports the current released version and mixing versions would be problematic. We are working to split this out so that using the pre-release option locally won't impact your ability to play on the service.

Excellent! That has been the major issue for me not trying out multi-player games yet; I like to keep the pre-release option on.

1) Are you having problems finding players and setting up a multiplayer game? Not finding players but starting a game and finishing it. A start time-date should be imposed and a timeframe for each turn also. People not finishing games should have it reported in a kind of reliability report.

2) Have you been able to play a game using the asymmetrical service? If not, what went wrong? Never done it.

3) Have you finished a multiplayer game? If not, why? Never, people dropped off sooner or later.

4) Have you had connection problems? If so, could you reconnect and continue playing? No serious problem.

5) Anything else you want to share? Perhaps suggestions for the interface? Some kind of cadence should be included in the games. I did PBEM for Axis & Allies and it worked very well. That could be a starting point for partecipation rules to be adapted to this much more advanced interaction. http://www.aamc.net/bunker/doc.ASP

I think a problem with the multiplayer service is its lack of a chat option to speak with other player confidentially. In other words, all conversation is done where all players can see. I suggest that you make an option where players can select who can observe their message.

when i try it always says: "You don't have the current content used by the multiplayer service (version 1.26.27589.120). If you have Making History II installed you should close the browser, update Making History II to the latest version, and try again.

If you don't have Making History II installed you can go to the support page to download the current version.

If you're on a Mac you will need to launch the game once before playing online."

The "failed to start" problem that we reproduced was a bug in the game itself and is fixed in 1.27. We are just waiting for Mac App store approval and then will be releasing it.
