New 1.29 pre-release update offers first look at "The Grand Finale"

Posted on Nov 26, 2013 at 03:00 PM by Chris

Lots of stuff to like in this pre-release update. First off is the new D-Day scenario we're working on: "The Grand Finale". It's not quite finished yet but we wanted you all to give it a try and post about your experience. This update also includes a lot of AI improvements, especially in how troops are used, so if you see units not taking action when you think they should, let us know! You should see improvement in invasion behavior as well.

Another thing you will notice at once is the map itself. It's had a bit of makeover, tell us what you think! Also keep in mind that you can use the new scenario as a template for mods.

Note that these things are either known issues or just not yet implemented for The Grand Finale:

  • Descriptions not yet in for nations or scenario in the launcher, (but they should be in the game)
  • Trade deals not current
  • MPU's for major nations not updated
  • Most initial production not set
  • Infrastructure not fully updated
  • Military access not fully implemented

There is a LOT more! RELEASE NOTES HERE

Remember you must have checked the pre-release box on the options page to get this update. It is still "beta" and not the official 1.29 update.

Enjoy!!

That's great !

I would'n expect that to happen. Is this also partially related to the Great War planned improvements? I mean, common code.

Editor doesn't launch for me. When I hit "edit mod" it acts like it is loading the editor window in the launcher, and then it disappears, like a killed process. I reinstalled the entire game, but the same issue happens. The normal game loads fine though, it seems. And the map looks noticably better!! I love the darker shades and more clear region borders! Wow!

Somewhat. If anything we develop for the new game could, in any way, improve the present game, we will try to add it.

In our testing things look good. Can you give us more details? Are you having trouble with saves created with previous versions, or ones created with the update? Also a debugview of the load failing would help.

Got it. Looks like it may be an issue with the Steam version - we're investigating.

Yes, the bug was with the "Client Process" option. It is fixed and will be in the next update.

I've played it on four different machines, including a Mac, and the colors aren't dark on any of them. Could it be your monitor? Have you tried tweaking the brightness a bit on your display?

I use that monitor (Acer 19" 1280x1024) on 4 different PCs and all are fine.

It was also fine with MHII till latest release.

This way is not pleasant :-(

I must have noted this in a thread but the Japanese and Italian 2nd Heavy Tanks as well as the MBTs have the same paint job as the German ones and so does Italy's Superheavy tanks. And this hasn't been fixed yet :(.

Well, we are not really well known for building tanks...

For the top of the line you could use the Ariete tank, kind of initial Leopard II equivalent.

I love the texture of the rivers now... I really feel like the interface is more like a satellite image rather than a dusty old map. I think it's marvellous that Muzzy Lane still such a sense of responsibility to the consumer that they have made such an improvement to an already released game free of charge. I will definitely be buying TGW for that reason - besides the fact that it looks like it's going to be an awesome game.

I am so impressed with the new AI. France and Germany are at war in my current Italy game, and Germany is currently pounding the Maginot line with two air forces - one consists of ELEVEN early bomber units, and the other five early bomber units. Where before they made pathetic bombing runs with one unit stacks, they now seem to genuinely use their air force effectively to destroy enemy positions. Well done, Muzzy Lane, I hope the reviewers play this game again with the new AI, since it seems far better than ever before.

After 258 turns at AI level 10 some considerations:

1) the AI is much smarter. I'll need to stress my I ;-)

2) finally we don't have those huge masses of divisions doing nothing. AI uses them.

3) texture: who cares!

4) history is not yet back: no divided china, no spanish civil war

5) economy is much more balanced, possibly too easy

6) I want a battle report whereever my units are involved: currently I don't get for air vs ship and if the battle was initated by an ally and I joined. In addition at the end of the battle and also duting it I should be able to see what I killed. 43 kills means nothing. Please fix this one, should be easy...

7) technology and industry is well developed by AI and finally it uses also the upgrades (at least england)

A bug: Italy occupied suez in turn 259.

In turn 260 an english ship (I'm at war with them) passed through.

In turn 261 a transport is sitting exactly in the suez channel...

ML, you have a bug ;-)

It was a new game from 1.29, the game loads but then crashes rather frequently (3 or 4 times an hour).

Where should I send the dump files?

Edit: for that matter where do I find them? All i can find in my Muzzy Lane user folder is .log files

Edit2: Also for some reason Brazil is the leader of my alliance even though I'm ranked 7th and they're ranked 11th is there anyway to force this to right itself?

Edit3: Crashes occuring very frequently can barely make it between turns now. All the log files say the same thing: FAIL(0) .CMemPool.cpp 310 CMemPool::Alloc

The .dmp files should just be in your "documents" folder. Send them to support@muzzylane.com

If you have a dxdiag.txt file that might be more useful in this case than the .dmp file

OK, at level 10 is really difficult to survive starting with Italy.

The combined effects of improved AI (my compliments) and massive capacity production bonus (it's 2x mine) make if almost impossible to win.

1) I'd like to know HOW the AI level affects the gameplay.

I understand that at level 10 the output of cities is doubled and build time is 1/2. As I lower the AI level the build bonus is lower.

2) I'd like to know if this AI setting affects anyhow the routines of the AI or just the bonuses.

3) I'd apreciate to play with full AI capabilities but no bonuses. Is level 5 what I'm looking for?

I just ran a memory check of the current 1.29 pre-release game vs. 1.28 in LDOP. My memory showed significantly less memory for 1.29 than for 1.28. My machine specs are very similar to yours and I have no performance or memory issues. Try running Task Manager while you play and see exactly where memory is going. For reference:
1.28, TLOP, Turn 1: 509,100. Turn 2: 518,000
1.29, TLOP Turn 1: 453,800. Turn 2: 469,000.

The only changes are the bonuses. There is a secondary effect on the AI in that it can build up faster and so attack earlier when it has the advantage.

If this is still a problem on the new pre-release I'll do so and post the results there (Steam automatically updates so my game would've already changed version). I don't think the game was using a lot of memory to be honest. System performance is usually fine while running the game.

On Diff 10 the Ai gets 100% IPU Bonuses and 75% allredy finished Produktion so that an IPU 5 City can produce everything as fast as a Players 20 IPU City. So its roughly x4. ^^

When you start a Game with a Nation ( Idiology ) You dont want to play on Diff 10 then +1 Next Turn + Saving + Reloading with a different Nation ( Idiology ) You wanted to Play then you get their +100% IPU Bonus but not the 75% allready finished Prod. Is this considered a Bug ?

Then what about that the Difficulty is still focused on Idiology and not the Victory Options like Nation Victory / Idiology V. / Alliance V. ?

    July 17, 2014

"Although the graphic and mechanics are similar to Muzzy Lane’s World War II games, play in the new game is different. The world—even Europe—was not as developed in 1912 as it was in 1933. Gaining wealth and increasing military might is a function of building factories in cities. These factories must have well-developed rail systems, and only Britain and most of Germany are well-heeled in this respect. Powers such as Austria-Hungary and even France didn’t have enough double-tracked lines to expand their manufacturing base or easily move troops. Colonies in Asia and Africa not only have poor transportation systems but very backward agriculture. "
