DISCUSSIONS
First of all, if anyone wants to try it, a demo is available from Steam, as well as the full game for around $20.
This is probably my favorite RTS right now and I've only played the demo, it's awesome. It's kind of old, from around 2007, though there was an expansion in march.
It takes place in an alternate history where rather than allow the Soviet Union collapse in 1989, the USSR storms across West Germany, eventually consuming all of Europe except for the UK. Scandinavian regions are eventually conquered as well. Soon after, a large Soviet force lands in Seattle, and that's where you come in.
I have to start by saying that this game is some serious eye candy. While the character models aren't awesome, vehicles, buildings, and the landscape are all beautifully detailed. But even more importantly, the explosions are just as pretty. And believe me when I say that there are alot of explosions. This is probably one of the most hectic RTS's I've ever played. Artillery shells and airstrikes are constantly raining down from the skies, and debris flies through the air realistically. Particle effects look great as well.
But graphics are nothing without gameplay, and World in Conflict delivers. Controls won't take too long to get used to. Vehicles all move realistically.Troops can even be ordered into transports to cross the battlefield more quickly. Plus, all units have special abilities like smoke screens, TOW missiles, and HEAT shells. And you get to have Bradley APC's. Definition of awesome.
What really stands out is the support menu. If you're doing well enough, you can call in a number of different support options like surface to air missles, various artillery barrages, and air strikes. The only trouble with this is that enemies tend to clump their units together, meaning that a well-placed airstrike often decimates them. Not too difficult, but still fun to play. Now go play it. NAO!!!

WiC is probably my favorite RTS game hands down. I downloaded the No Hope mod and boy did things get good. What's weird is after running the mod it actually sped up the game performance. If you think the regular game is good, play the No Hope mod, it makes the game freakin fantastic.

Alright guys, resurrecting this topic. I just bought this game yesterday from Steam (Soviet Assault came with it for free), and I'm up to the level "Into the Mountains". You don't get to use the type of units I'd normally use for this type of mission though. Any tips?

I'm trying to remember, what happens in that level?

The Russians land IN Seattle?? Like thru 100 miles of Puget Sound right pass a nuclear sub base and a port containing a Nimitz class aircraft carrier? And 40 miles from Ft. Lewis and an Air Force base?

The one after that.
ah, that mission. The first 15-20 minutes of that level are kinda hard, but after that it's fun.

They come in using modified cargo ships to slip past defenses.

yep, that's a good strategy for that level.
My favorite parts of the game are
- The Battle for Pine Valley (I think it's something like that)
- The First NATO mission
- And the last level, it's quite epic.

How many? I know it's just a game and all, but good grief. Seattle is maybe the most impractical port in the world to invade. You can really only get heavy tanks out of Seattle going south. Otherwise it's over bridges pass Lake Union, the Cut or Ballard.
That aside, it sounds like a fun game. Is it like C & C?
Have any of you played or checked out Twilight:2000? It's a roleplaying game from the early 90's. The Cubans and Russians invade Texas and the southern US and the Russians invade Alaska and make it not quite to Seattle.

One of the reasons I liked WiC so much was because it reminded me of the old T:2000 pen & paper RPG. Well, not the gameplay but the 80's Cold War Soviet vehicles and weapons. Played T:2000 for years.

Alot of cargo ships. Like... ALOT. And they really do end up moving South when the bridges to the East are destroyed, though they do apparently find another way through when they attack Fort Teller.
