No, it was officially neutral and unaligned, although it was a communist country.

USSR is stronger than USA, because the soviets got many natural resourses more than USA. The soviet industry where stronger. I don't whant somebody to say: Why USA is weaker? At the moment USA is stronger than Russia, but in the past USSR where stronger.

The US should be stronger than the USSR, seriously. Don't say "natural resources", because the Soviet Union may have been big, but after the Volga it's mostly snow and barren plains. Historically the Soviet Union never really stood a chance when comparing industry and riches. The western world made them look big and powerful because they needed a common enemy. The Soviet Union collapsed for a reason, it couldn't keep up with the capitalists economically or militarily.

Militarily they easily kept up with the Western powers albeit creating massive financial debt. The only way to stop a tank rush in Western Europe by Russia was by a tactical nuclear strike according to America. So without nuclear weapons the USSR was a more powerful military force and even with nuclear weapons in the equation the Soviets had more. The USSR also had the worlds largest mineral and energy supplies and Russia still does to this day.

Their economy was terrible though and led to their downfall with the huge military spending a major reason.

The only reason USSR were considered to have the back foot n the nuclear arms race was because they did not have anywhere from which to launch short-range older missiles, which mad up the majority of both US and USSR arsenals, this all lead to the cuban missile crisis of course.

On the topic of NATO's first attack, let's not forgot that the United States had more wars than the USSR during the cold war, and the Warsaw pact had almost NO AGGRESSION AT ALL. The only state from the Warsaw pact which led military operations was the Soviet Union, and they did it even against allies (the 1968 assault of Czechoslovakia for example). In consequence, both the superpowers showed the world imperialist tendencies at that time, while their allies were quite and peaceful, and I don`t consider NATO's attack an issue...
