Flags for ideology
said on Dec 22, 2009 at 09:22 AM

Hey, if you can find period flags, I'll bow to you and kiss your feet. I am researching the best I can, and even reading through case studies and books on the subject, finding examples of political flags isn't easy. Also, we have to remember in countries which did not experience actual regime changes the proponents of certain ideologies would adopt simple symbols. i.e. the Red flag is universally communist, it's what they where waving at the Battle of Cable Street, not a British National equivalent. Heck, the flag of the Chinese Communist Party is still a Hammer & Sickle, almost the same as the old Soviet flag.

There is a certain amount of artistic licence necessary here, also, these are just ideas or starting points. :)

Yes, especially when you start looking at flags for groups like Belizeans, Arakans & Tuareg.

First you need to upload them to a site somewhere in the web. Then make a link to that with a ! in front. If you don't know how to post it, see one of the posts with pictures and press " " button. Then you will see the code.

For the smaller nations I would just make a default flag system. Such as having the hammer and sickle into the regular flag for Communists and a swastika for Fascists.

I came up with one question regarding ideology and flag change: If the ideology changes, can the name of the country also change? I was mainly considering Russian Empire -> Soviet Russia/USSR -> Russian Federation.

We won't generally alter the name of the nation unless there already is a nation with the same name. We can also use events to special case names.

I was wondering how could be the flags for the USA. I made these in Photoshop:

Communist flag (using the symbol of the American communist party):

Fascist flag (using the Blood Drop of the KKK):

Authoritarian flag (using the Rebel war flag - I would also considerer a eagle or a big solo star):

Democratic flag (this one is not of my creation, you know...):

It would be better if the Fascist flag had a Fasces instead of the blood drop, it makes more sense similarly the authoritarian flag should be a simple blue field with 48 stars and a gold border.

NEW ZEALAND

COMMUNIST: Not so easy, as its the ol red flag problem again, so research has found.

And artistic licence produces

Or:

AUTHORITARIAN: The United Tribes of New Zealand 1834 to 1840

FASCIST: The best I could find here is the flag of the New Zealand National Front, a small White Nationalist political party in New Zealand. It was formed in 1968 out of the New Zealand branch of the League of Empire Loyalists, which in turn was a ginger group, led by Arthur K. Chesterton, a former leading figure in the British Union of Fascists, who had served under Oswald Mosley.

Eg:

Or:

Or if you look at the top left corner of this photo from a rally.

DEMOCRATIC: New Zealand 1854 to Present

Thanks to everyone who's putting up flag suggestions. While I still have to go through the research on my own, it's interesting and helpful to see the decisions and creative choices others have made.
