I just got this game and it seems a bit overwhelming. Whats a good country and scenario to start with? Also, what are some basic things to do/strategies to employ while playing?

USA. Start to get the hang of the economy, buy knowing what you do in cases as maintainig your resources and producing them. Understand the world Market. Explore the Tech tree, and know how to handle it. Try out the different views you have. Basicly, understand all 5(?) buttons in the top right corner. Questions can be asked on this forum.
Some things I can think of just now.

The first nation I played, was in the MH1 demo, and I played Germany. I don't know why I picked them, but it seemed a good nation to play. At the time I had no clue what the hell IPUs were, and what in the world they did, so I never built any reinforcments.
I was able to conquer the entire Balkans, and most of western Russia, learned to leave Poland alone after about 6 playthroughs with the allies declaring war.
Anyways, after all, I've been playing MH for a little over a year (I played before I joied this site back in March 2009) and I've learned that the USA is always a fun nation and a good 1st playthrough nation to choose, if you like the warfare part of the game best, then I reccomend Germany, if you really want a challange, then I reccomnd Italy.
any war needs a good economy. USA is best to learn the economy. It is strong, but isolated. So you can do anything you want and you don't have to go to war. I like that.

USA is probably the best because of its vast resources, upgrade your cities. I like to upgrade Honolulu so that I have a port to build and repair ships in without having to go all the way to the west coast. Don't forget to research your technology and watch your coal production if you upgrade a lot of your cities to the "50" mark.
Watch out buddy, the last time you only got a hole through your head...this time it could be worse

I decided to play as America. What exactly do you need to do to upgrade the economy? The manual doesn't do a real good job of telling you how to play; it just tells you what everything is.

I actually managed to figure out most of the stuff myself. Just keep in mind that to move a division, you have to left click it. Ignore that huge list of regions you can send them to and just right click on your destination. It'll save you a huge amount of time, trust me.

you mean at first you moved your units by selecting a region from that move-to-list? Wow...that would be a pain in the ass to do every time!

Yeah, but I learned my lesson.
That was what happened to me. In the D Day Scenerio, I had to do it for all of my groupd until i learned the left click trick.

ok, I already thought this was weird, but now I checked for myself. To be exact, we are talking about giving a unit the order to move from A to B, right? And according to you guys it will have to be either by LEFT clicking to where you want the selected unit to go, or by doing by the 'Move' menu?
now I just started the whole game up for just not believing I do that in my game too, and it appears I just simply RIGHT click to point the unit where to go,.
