I remember that the East Germans were called the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) for "Democratic Republic of Germany" Obviously it was Communist so... why was it called the Democratic Republic?
Same with Yemen, or at least South Yemen when it was Communist. "Democratic Republic of Yemen".
But, the "Democratic Republic of the Congo" or, formorly Zaire, actually is a Democracy.
It was an attempt by the USSR to make the Soviet side of Europe all sunshine and lollipops. Often times communists appeal to the "democratic side of government." Although the democracy they have in mind is true democracy; the majority of people rule, no central government, just the people. Obviously when put into practice it doesn't work, pure democracy is borderline anarchy.
USSR actually stands for Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (or Soviet and Socialist is flipped, I cant remember which and don't feel like googling it right now). If the former is right, then Socialist Republics is the greatest oxymoron of all time.

No, you're right. It is indeed the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. But to be fair, I'd say that the greatest oxymoron of all time, even though it never actually exsisted (Probably), is Communist Nazis.
Wait, what was this thread about again?

If you really look at the two, they weren't all that different.
Something about Egypt, I'm not sure, one of firestone's unreadable posts I think...

Yes, but ideologically, they can be placed on complete opposite sides of the political spectrum. Also, they hate each other.

I wouldn't say the two ideologies hate one another, I would say the leaders at the time that were the front runners of these two ideas of government hated on another. It was no secret that Hitler hated communists and after attacking the USSR and forcing a war of annihalation against the Russians, Stalin quickly learned to hate the facists too. Before this however the two countries worked together such as the invasion of Poland.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure they were really only freinds out of convenience.

They were. The only reason they signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was so they could carve up eastern Europe at the beginning of world war 2 without having to go to war with each other until one or the other was ready to go up against the other country. Stalin knew Hitler would invade the USSR but they weren't ready for war so they used the pact to bide themselves some time to get the army up to scratch after the debacle of the war against Finland. Also Stalin used it to extend Russia's borders so that when Germany invaded the USSR they would have much further to go to get to Moscow, Leningrad and so on. Hitler used the pact so that he could conquer western Europe so that he could then concentrate on eastern Europe. One of the main principals of Blitzkrieg was to not fight on two fronts so the pact was useful to make sure this didn't happen. Although because Hitler was an arrogant and impatient fool he left Britain as a thorn in Germany's side which in the long run cost them the war. Plus the two ideologies promote one party countries so they hated each other anyway.
