My own favorite strategy game? War in the Pacific, Admiral's Edition, definitely. Oh, yes. A brilliant game, with developers devoted to improvements and support. A grognard's delight, yet with plenty of optional ways to reduce micromanagement for those who want to.
War in the Pacific, Admiral's Edition is strictly military. I hope that MHII develops so as to be more about economics, trade, culture/nationality clashes, etc.
From the forum, it's clear that many players (not me) love MHII for its free-form, ahistorical military aspect (e.g., the challenge of leading Equador to take over the world). Personally, I'd prefer to see MHII develop more in keeping with Niall Ferguson's ideas, e.g. the economic pressures that compel or restrain wars, the roles of ideology, culture and ethnicity, etc. Yes, I know that would bore most players.

I currently bumming Empire: Total War. The game's awesome and if the world as included with the previous and next century from the 18th (17th and 19th) that would be my ultimate game (and probably never happen :P)
My favourite strategy game of all time is probably Red Alert 2 and the expansion Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge with nostalgia a major factor. It was also probably the first strategy game I ever played so it was my first love and I developed an attachment which holds to this day xD

I think for turn-based games, which I prefer, my favorite has to be Making HIstory, but Civilization is good too and probably the only turn-based game the average gamer would know of. For RTS games Command & Conquer is legendary but my favorites are Company of Heroes, Men of War, and World in Conflict.
Nah, Civilizations (IV) has a fuc*ed up combat system. I still don't get it, I attack bowmen with like 20 knights and still lose, WTF?
I prefer Making History 1 (2 is still...meh, I wait), CoH + awesome mods who will be released, Plants vs Zombies (don't know if it is RTS, but it has to do with strategy), Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (5 has no skirmish :( ), Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 & 2, Stronghold Crusader.
What I really hate is the C&C series, just lame, Surpreme Commander..

There's a mod for Napoleon: Total War that makes it a WW1 total war if you're interested

No, there isn't. There is a mod to the game Napoleon: Total War what make the game Napoleon: Total War into a WW1 Total War game. It is a conversion through a mod not a new game. I too would love an Empire: Total War covering the 19th and/or 20th centuries :P

Oh, either way that would be awesome.

WW1 Total War will never be make. Just too boring battles, but I think many games/mods made some great WW1 gameplay. And yes, I forgot AoE2, one of the first games I've ever played. The atmosphare...everything is just awesome
