Being interested in Japan, I like to play it in my strategy games (such as in HoI, Making History, Civilization, Red Alert 3) Additionally, I think its one of the more challenging countries to play as. However, I found the nation almost too hard to manage in the first Making History. I actually had a much easier time with them in HoI 3 for some reason.

I know there are going to be a lot of changes to the gameplay in MH 2, and was wondering if anyone could tell me how this will affect the difficulty of playing Japan.

I'd suppose it depends on your style of play. One style may make it easier, while another may make it harder.

Cycle of event for Japan is usually as follows.

  1. Take over China.

  2. Get wtfpwned by the U.S.

  3. The people celebrate Happy New Year 1938.

I would prefer it this way:

  1. Take Over China

  2. Eliminate U.S. Pacific Fleet

  3. Occupy and defend Southeast Asia.

  4. The people celebrate the founding of the Co-Prosperity Sphere.

The problem is that Japan can not keep up with the industrial capacity of the US. I found that if I group my entire navy it helps beat back the US fleet. However in the long run I could never beat the US in the long run.

it's not hard. once china is conquered (i usually leave a chinese rump state governing the western territories), build up your navy, lots of aircraft carriers. once you've destroyed the american navy, which isn't hard, then bombard west coast cities and destroy west coast armies, until you think it's safe to establish an army on the american mainland.

this is assuming you played a scenario starting before Japan is already at war with the US. those scenarios are pretty hard, since Japan's oil shortage means a constant drop in arms. which is bad.

It's not hard to completely smash the U.S in the 1933 scenario. Don't conquer China, just buildup your ipus, research light tanks, and max airforce/naval research. If done right tokyo should be churning out super carriers before 1941

I've always had a tough time with Japan. I'll take your suggestions though! It'd be fun.
