Just as certain City Buildings are required to construct particular units: (Aircraft Plants, Shipyards, and Vehicle Plants, for example), some Research Topics can only be selected if a city contains a particular Research Building. This can lead to possible confusion when you complete a project and the resulting technologies are still not available. This "cheat sheet" can help keep track of the various buildings and what they can do for you.

Air Force Academy

can be built once Mass Production research is complete, and only in a city that contains a University. It is required to research:

  • Warplanes (can build Biplane Fighters and Bombers),
  • Close Air Support (can build Basic Carriers and naval bombers, and research Improved Aircraft Engines),
  • Strategic Bombing (can build Heavy Bombers).

Note that the Academy is for research, actual building of the planes requires an Aircraft Plant and an Airfield in the region.


Chemical Lab

can be built once Scientific Method research is complete, and only in a city that contains a University. It is required to research:

  • Chemical Fertilizers (which allows Collective Farms to be built in regions),
  • Petrochemicals (which allows Oil Refineries to be build in regions and opens Diesel Engines and Heavy Industries research),
  • the Fischer Tropsh Process (allows for Synthetic Fuel Plant),
  • Antibiotics (which allows Factory Farms to be built in regions),
  • High Octane Fuels (can build Improved Carrier Fighters), and
  • Synthetic Pesticides (which allows Corporate Farms to be built in regions).

Note the lab is for research only, actual building of the planes requires an Aircraft Plant and an Airfield in the region.


Military Academy

can be built once Military Sciences research is complete, and only in a city that contains a University. It is required for:

  • Military Engineering (which allows Earthworks to be built in regions),
  • Attrition Warfare (can build Engineers I and Mountain Infantry I, and research Alpine Warfare Training),
  • Proving Grounds (can build Munitions Plant and Horse Artillery),
  • Alpine Warfare Training (can build Engineers II and Mountain Infantry II, and research Deep Operations),
  • Deep Operations (can build Engineers III and Mountain Infantry III, and research Guerrilla Tactics),
  • Maneuver Warfare (can build Mechanized and Motorized Infantry III, and research Tank Prototype II, Autofrettage technique, and Vehicle Radios),
  • Paratroopers (can build Airborne Infantry III and research Airborne Assault),
  • Guerrilla Tactics (can build Engineers IV and Mountain Infantry IV, and research Hedgehog Defense),
  • Airborne Assault (can build Airborne Infantry IV and research Infiltration),
  • Hedgehog Defense (can build Engineers V and Mountain Infantry V, and research Deep Defense),
  • Field Radios (can build Marines V and research Jungle Warfare),
  • Infiltration (can build Airborne Infantry V and research Special Forces),
  • Jungle Warfare (can build Marines VI),
  • Deep Defense (can build Engineers VI and Mountain Infantry VI),
  • Special Forces (can build Airborne Infantry VI), *Advanced Logistics (can build Mechanized and Motorized Infantry VI).

Note that the Military Academy is for research only, a Vehicle Plant is required to build mechanized and Motorized forces. Also note that many of the research items listed need additional requirements as well as the Military Academy to become available.


Naval Academy

can be built once Ironworks research is complete, and only in a city that contains a University. It is required for:

  • Naval Infantry (can build Marines I and research Amphibious Assaults),
  • Amphibious Assaults (can build Marines II and research Landing Craft),
  • Air Carrier Operations (can build Early Carrier Fighters and Light Carriers, and research Naval Bombing Tactics),
  • Naval Bombing Tactics (can build Early Naval Bombers),
  • Escort Convoys (can build Frigate).

Note that the Naval Academy is for research only, a Shipyard is required to build the ships and an Aircraft Plant is required to build the carrier-based planes. Also note that some research items listed need additional requirements as well as the Naval Academy to become available.


Nuclear Lab

can be built once Applied Physics research is complete, and only in a city that contains a Research Facility. It is required for:

  • Nuclear Chain Reaction (can research Uranium Enrichment),
  • Uranium Enrichment (can research Nuclear Fission),
  • Nuclear Fission (can research Atomic Bomb).

Note that some research items listed need additional research requirements as well as the Nuclear Lab to become available.


Orbital Science Lab

can be built once Astrophysics research is complete, and only in a city that contains a Research Facility. It is required for:

  • Supersonic Aerodynamics (can build Advanced Jet Fighters),
  • Staged Rockets (can build ICBMs).

Note: Research items listed need additional research requirements as well as the Orbital Science Lab to become available.


Research Facility

can be built once Electromagnetism research is complete, and only in a city that contains a University. It adds 2 additional RPU's to any city it's constructed in. A Research Facility is also a prerequisite for building a Nuclear Lab and an Orbital Science Lab.


Rocket Lab

can be built once Aerospace Engineering research is complete, and only in a city that contains a University. It is required for:

  • Rocket Engines (can build Rocket Artillery),
  • Air to Air Rockets (can build Advanced Fighters),
  • Air to Sea Missile (can build Improved Naval Bombers),
  • Guided Systems (can build Guided Bombs),
  • Liquid Fuel Engines (can build Ballistic Missiles and research Air to Air Missiles),
  • Air to Air Missiles (Basic Jet Fighters).

Note that the Rocket Lab is for research, actual building of the planes requires an Aircraft Plant and an Airfield in the region. Some research items listed need additional research requirements as well as the Rocket Lab to become available.


Technology Center

can be built once National Laboratories research is complete, and only in a city that contains a University. A Technology Center adds 3 additional RPU's to any city it's constructed in.


University

can be built once Subsistence Economy research is complete. It adds 1 RPU to any city it's constructed in. Building Universities in your cities is critical to increasing your nation's ability to conduct research, and is a requirement for most other research buildings.
