Over 70% of the earth's surface is covered by water, granted it is mostly salt water. The technology to convert salt water to drinkable water already exists. If the need EVER arises humans will PROBABLY (notice I do not claim to know the future like some people in this thread) be able to adapt quickly enough and efficiently covert ocean water into usable fresh water.

And as a side effect, we will have salt for our steaks, french fries etc :)

All this talk about water.... More than likely, it will be the air that will kill off a HUGE percentage of the population. It doesn't take that many particulates per million to make the atmosphere toxic. Anybody notice the drastic rise in cancers over the last several decades? Comes from essentially living in an atmosphere stuffed with carcinogens. Almost as bad as working in an asbestos factory without a respirator. Plus, it causes viruses and bacteria to mutate into something more durable. Like, the effectiveness of penicillin has been dropping of dramatically. Note that it wasn't until fairly recently that HIV and AIDS manifested themselves, as opposed to several millenia previously when Mankind was practically stewing in filth.

Laboratory studies of bacteria cultures reveals a recurring pattern: A culture will grow (thrive) until it reaches to limit of its environment (the Petri dish). Then the culture stews in its own waste products and kills off about 98% of the whole culture. Then the survivors start the process all over again.

Look around you. That shimmer in the air you see is the glass wall of our Petri dish.

Just a whole bunch of 'Cause and Effect' without any proof or anything tying the 'Cause' to the 'Effect'. With a little dramatics thrown in. Very creative though :)

The End of Antibiotics (Guardian)

Interesting read...

While this is just one article based on one particular study I do not doubt at all that bacteria is becoming immune to our antibiotics.

What I have a problem with is.... people professing to know what will happen. This paper does not even profess to know what exactly will happen....will a NEW solution be found....maybe...maybe not who knows?

Beside's CaptainPatch's argument blows thegeniousmartin's theory out of the water....If bacteria starts killing everyone off we can't very well have a Over Population problem can we? Solves the resources shortage problem as well.

One word: nanotechnology xD.

It seems the most plausible solution thus far if all antibiotics become useless. Of course then you have to contend with the possibility of the Earth becoming a grey blob

Isnt it funny that almost every body thinks that what I have said is just ... well .... bullshit!?

But with the speed of the population growth soon there will be to many humans on this planet. And more people is having it better, and better wealth all over the Globe (not because this is bad), this means that the luxury that we in the west have enjoyed (like cars like an example) will be possible in other development countries!
Which means more carbon dioxide emissions and that our climate will get worse.
Also food will be a issue ... more people who is better of ... means less food for every body.

And this doesnt need a lot of statistic fact ... we all know that many countries are over populated and that resources is being consumed. And we also know that China will be around 2025 the next superpower of the world.

If you ignore this ... to bad for you ... if not ... contact me and join up and make your voice heard!!!

Didn't you read CaptainPatch's post....bacteria is going to kill everyone... it can't be both ways.

Just answer me one question...how can you tell me exactly what is going to happen in the next year...much less decades into the future.

If you ignore this ... to bad for you ... if not ... contact me and join up and make your voice heard!!!

Ahhh, you're one of those... I knew it

Im gonna try to get on topic again.

This topic isnt about the end of the world ... no I cant prodict such a thing.

Im just saying that we have come to the end of this era, 20th centurys big guys/superpowers is being replaced by Asian countrys.
And while natural reacources is being consumed (they are not gone or close to gone but we are consuming way to much) our population in the world grows. And in the long run this aint very good, just negative for the future.

Welcome to the shift, the transformation, the new world and the end of an old one!

Your sentiment seems to promote a "Unless you definitely KNOW that something bad will happen -- and when! -- there's no need to do anything" attitude. Makes me think of being on the S.S. Titanic shortly after it brushed up against an iceberg. "No need to panic. We have everything under control. You can go back to whatever it was you were doing before that little bump. WE will tell you when -- IF! -- there's anything to worry about." Then you run into a wild-eyed passenger proclaiming "We're sinking! Believe me! We have to get ready to abandon ship!" Just ignore him, everything is under control. You KNOW this because the people in charge told you NOT to worry.
