Countering the Blitzkrieg --- A French AAR

Now, some of you may remember my other French AAR, where I took hold over most of Europe, that AAR, took place back in the 1933 scenario, and I had spent most of my time spamming tanks, and basically raping everyone. This time, I will play as an Allied-Aligned France, and do everything historically (declaring war on Germany in 1939, i.e.) and I will be defending most of the war, and maybe make a few harassment attacks into the Rhineland or Wurttemburg.

Some Specs:

  • Game: MHGold
  • Scenario: The End of Diplomacy, 1939
  • Difficulty: Normal
  • Partisans: Off

As I start up the game, I realize a few things.

  1. France has a large defensive military
  2. France has a small air force
  3. France has a large navy
  4. France has a shitload of colonies to manage
  5. French Industry < German Industry

I realize that I should expand France's defenses to the Italian border as well, it is very likely that the Italians will ally with the Germans, and I don't want them exploiting my flank. I have also setup fallback positions in case one line falls. I move some infantry armies over to their border, and proceed to upgrade defensive installations in the area.

To keep me from having to manage so many colonial territories, Syria is given independence, with control of my Arabian territories, Morocco and Algeria are given independence, Tunisia stays french. All of Indochina is liberated. My troops defending Morocco and Northern Algeria are piled onto Transports and sent off to mainland France, to aid in the fight.

All french cities above 30 IPU's are immediately upgraded, when they're advanced, they will help the war effort by spamming light tanks. All French cities below 30 IPU's will be issued to research, to gain Heavy Tanks, and, eventually Advanced when the time comes.

Time is definitely on our side, even if we go to war with Germany, Germany will still have to fight on multiple fronts, while we only need to fight on one, unless the Italians join in on the war.

I have not pushed the end-turn button yet. But I'm sure that when I do, World War 2 will break out. Wish me luck.

Well, for the first 80 turns, I started a massive research campaign to reach Heavy Tanks before the Germans did. This turned out to be, what seems like, so far, the only French triumph over Germany. Germany, unexpectedly, attacked Alsace the turn after I declared war on them. I wasn't as well prepared, and I ended up losing the region.

By the time I realized that the battle of Alsace was a lost cause, and that the Germans were too strong, I ended up retreating, and defending what's now a level 4 fortification Champagne and Burgundy. The Germans have failed to exploit my weaknesses and I still somehow hold those two regions. Eventually the USSR invaded Nazi Germany with some minor success. This proved very important on the French front, as it took some strength away from the German defenders currently in Alsace, which is down to 570, from 1,750.

The whole game, I have spent every single turn in extreme paranoia, waiting for the Germans to make their move. At that point, my reserve of a dwindling 5 heavy tanks, worth only 602 power, will move in and encircle the bastards by retaking Alsace.

The British also proved helpful by making some small, but damaging attacks against the German coast, consisting usually of tons of infantry and tanks, mixed. Due to the strong German defensive units, this proved useless, and most attacks were beaten back.

Before researching heavy tanks, I spent a long period of hiding in my secret premier cave in Paris, coordinating a plan that was so useless and stupid, it was bound to work. The plan? Operation Tokyo-Baghdad. Tokyo and Baghdad had absolutely nothing to do with my plan. The plan was basically the following.

  1. After upgrading Mersailles to advanced spam tanks and set the rally point at enemy controlled Alsace. Do the same for Paris.
  2. Spam, although in the long term turning to be a complete waste of IPU's, will eventually wear the Germans down.
  3. Continue spam.
  4. ???
  5. Something of a profit.

The plan was extremely stupid, and a complete waste of valuable tanks. Operation Tokyo-Baghdad ended in the rubble that became Alsace lorraine. During the operation, I lowered fortifications from level 4, to level 1. Agricultue from level 4, to level 1. Transportation from level 4 to level 0. You can't imagine how long the spam took. Sending a single 80 CP unit to fight against a 600 CP defense is suicide, but it was a success as it helped wear down the Germans, taking out alot of tanks and infantry.

By the point that the spam could no longer continue, Heavy tanks had been researched. And I only spammed 4 of those in harassment attack that would result in absolutely NO German losses. Now, I'm currently spamming tanks in La Marche, and waiting until i get at least 2,000 CP making a massive attack.

WOW, I did it.

Inspired by a massed Russian counter-offensive that retook Moscow, 25 french Heavy tanks, equaling almost 3,000 power, plunge into Alsace-Lorraine, and defeat the Germans instantly. Having destroyed the bulk of their armies in the west, the French commanders realized that this was a disaster for Germany. If French forces can overtake German territories faster than they can build more divisions, France would be victorious.

One thing I noticed, from the start of this save-game, was that I had saved, right before Germany was crumbling. Their loss at Moscow proved to be the fall of the German armies, as UK and Yugoslav forces pushed through the balkans, and the USSR began retaking many of their lost territories. My forces managed to defeat the largest German army in the west, which was at Alsace. Had I known that they were pouring more troops into the region, I would've attacked earlier, had my air force not been destroyed, which would've done recon.

I began realizing some mistakes I made, as I reloaded the save-game.

  • I hadn't been bringing my colonial armies off from the far off useless fronts.

  • I hadn't been producing enough units.

  • I hadn't attacked earlier.

I waiting until Saint-Nazaire and Nantes pumped out a very Heavies before making the massed assault. Steiner's Assault, which brought everything under control.

The fall of Alsace-Lorraine, was the fall of Germany. It only took 3 weeks for France to encircle the stronger German armies, and take Berlin. by then, the Reich was finished. As the Soviet union began wiping the Fascist invaders' blood on the Kremlin, for it's new paint job.

I stopped the game. I had achieved my VERY hard goal, and the game was won. Only minuscule Italy, Spain, and Japan are the last remnants of the obsolete Fascist ideology, which was overran by Democracy. French democracy.

Yeah that sort of pissed me off. They did however send air support which did kick the Luftwaffe out of Frenchie skies.
